Another interesting tour of your visit to Chios is in the central-western part of the island, including the Monastery of Nea Moni, the unique Avgonima and the historic Anavatos. The founding of the New Monastery is back in the 11th century and in 1990 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The monastery complex is located 12 km from the city of Chios, surrounded by a pine forest. Only 8.3km to the west you will find Avgonima another castle village where only 14 inhabitants live. It would be a mistake not to visit Anavatos, which is located 4.8km from Avgonima and 20km from the city of Chios.
The desert “Mystras of the Aegean” stands proud on the hill and offers its guests the most beautiful places to watch the sunset overlooking the Aegean Sea. In this unique “ghost village” there is only one resident.
